Zakah

The Pickering Islamic Centre collects zakah and ensures its prompt distribution to those in need, in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

About zakah

Zakah is the third pillar of Islam; the word itself means to purify — here, the purification of wealth. By giving zakah, the wealthy share with the poor, the concentration of wealth is checked, and a fairer distribution is ensured.

How it is calculated

Zakah is due once a year on savings held above the nisab threshold, at a rate of 2.5% (one-fortieth). This applies to cash, bank savings, all forms of gold and silver, investments, and business inventory and stock. (Different rates apply to certain agriculture and livestock.) It becomes payable at the end of the year once expenses have been met.

Zakah is an act of worship independent of Ramadan — it should be paid as soon as it is due rather than deferred.
