Grave cost
Grave opening & closing costs are payable directly to the cemetery (debit, credit card or cash). Grave (land) costs are payable to Pickering Islamic Centre (debit, cash or cheque only).

Mortuary facility
Masjid Usman has a well-equipped mortuary on site to perform washing (ghusl) and prepare the body for burial.
The coordinator or a PIC representative will accompany the next of kin to the hospital and complete all documents required for the release of the body. The deceased (mayyit) is then brought to the Centre for ghusl, preparation and Salat al-Janazah, before being transported to the cemetery for burial. If the family wishes their loved one to be buried in another cemetery, the Centre can make the required arrangements.
Pickering Islamic Centre issues a temporary Proof of Death Certificate to the family, which may be required to settle legal matters such as bank accounts, insurance claims and inheritance. The next of kin must also apply for the legal Death Certificate through Service Ontario.

Tax implications — guideline
When someone passes away in Ontario, the tax implications depend on factors such as the value of the estate, whether there was a will, and who inherits the assets. Key points to keep in mind:
Capital gains tax
There is a deemed disposition on death — assets such as real estate, stocks and investments are generally treated as sold at fair market value immediately before death, which can trigger capital gains tax. Assets transferred to a spouse or qualifying trust may pass on a tax-deferred basis.
Probate fees
The estate may be subject to Estate Administration Tax (probate fees), based on the total value of the estate. Some assets are exempt — for example, those passing directly to a surviving spouse.
Income tax
A final income tax return must be filed for the period from the start of the tax year to the date of death. Income earned in that period (including capital gains) is taxed accordingly, and unused credits and deductions can reduce the liability.
Tax credits & deductions
Credits and deductions such as the basic personal amount, medical expenses and charitable donations may help reduce the overall tax burden.
RRSPs & RRIFs
The full value of RRSPs/RRIFs is included in the deceased's income for the year of death, unless transferred directly to a surviving spouse or a financially dependent child or grandchild. Where an RRSP/RRIF passes to someone other than a spouse, it is generally taxed as income to the deceased unless the beneficiary is a financially dependent child or grandchild.
Principal residence exemption
A principal residence may qualify for the principal residence exemption, reducing or eliminating capital gains tax on the property.
Cemetery guidelines & updates
Mount Pleasant Group (MPG) — operators of Duffin Meadows and Thornton cemeteries — has reminded community partners of its cemetery by-laws, which exist to keep the grounds safe, accessible and welcoming.
MPG has noted an increase in non-permitted items placed on or near graves. Families were asked to remove non-compliant items; after the stated deadline, remaining items are carefully removed and stored for 60 days before being respectfully disposed of.
Non-permitted items include:
- Fences, railings, patio stones or decorative borders around graves
- Glass, ceramic or other breakable objects
- Unapproved benches, chairs, umbrellas or trellises
- Temporary memorials or signage not pre-approved by the cemetery
